Age of Wushu Coming to Consoles, Cinemas

in Age of Wushu, News

Snail Games, the group behind Martial Arts MMO Age of Wushu, has announced that they'll be bringing Wushu both to consoles and to the silver screen. Although little else was said about it, those hoping to get more into the lore, or those that want to play their favourite eastern-flavored MMO on the PS4/Xbox One may just end up getting their wish.

Although, actually, they may just have announced it a little bit early.

From IGN:

Snail Games founder and chairman Shi Hai said, "The Age of Wushu game looks and plays like a major martial arts motion picture so bringing the property to movie screens is a logical evolution. Our goal has always been for the property to reach the widest audience so evolving to a feature film and expanding the experience to consoles and mobile devices continues our plan."

So there are really three parts to this announcement. The first is that Age of Wushu will be coming as a film. Nothing has been said about whether it will be animated, live action, whether there's anybody involved or if it's just something they're actively pursuing. Will it be big budget? Will it be made by three people and a roll of sticky-back plastic?

Smart guess would probably be that they're looking to expand - but not too much. Expect something anime-ish (that will appeal to the gamer MMO crowd that already loves Age of Wushu), if it gets made at all.

The second two announcements are probably the more important ones. Age of Wushu is coming to consoles and to mobile devices. The former implied a PS4/Xbox One launch. As we reported earlier, it took the developers of Warframe only three months to port their game from PC to PS4, so it'd be no surprise to learn that other developers were following suit.

The other option, of course, is that they're building a brand new game, although that seems unlikely. A new franchise shouldn't be able to develop a spin-off and branch out into a feature film at the same time, not unless they were pulling World of Warcraft numbers.

That there will be something coming to mobile devices might either be amazing or incredibly poor, but it'll be best to reserve judgement. It might be a slightly watered down version of the game, either online or single player, or it might be a dress-up Age of Wushu doll sim. My guess is something in between, a game that will allow you to manage your account, do some MMORTS stuff and maybe even do some crazy martial arts.

No word on when we'll be hearing more on these projects or how far through development they are. All you need to know is there's a lot of Wushu on its way.
