Elder Scrolls Online to be subscription based

Just the day we're discussing the negatives and positives to subscription based services, and MMOs in particular, analyst Nicholas Lovell believes that Elder Scrolls Online is going to launch with subscription but will eventually turn free to play. Read on for details.

Elder Scrolls Online to launch with subscription

According to the article here, Gamesbrief founder Nichalos Lovell believes, because the development of Elder Scrolls Online goes back to 2007, when World of Warcraft was getting the best of subscriptions and there were not many free to play games, ESO is going to launch with subscription.

On the other hand, because the free-to-play transitions have been the trend in the last couple years, Lovell believes Elder Scrolls Online will turn f2p at some point. He also claimed that Electronic Arts is struggling with SWTOR.

"They will switch to free-to-play later, in the same way that many iOS games go from paid to freemium over their lifetime, EA is struggling with The Old Republic, but almost everyone else is transitioning to free-to-play."

Lately, we have seen MMOs like Age of Conan, City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings Online, Champions Online, Star Trek Online and more games choose the free to play business model.
