Elder Scrolls Online Announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

Sony announced at their conference yesterday that The Elder Scrolls Online, the MMO version of Bethesda's well loved and long running fantasy franchise, will be making its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Spring 2014. There will be exclusive beta testing on the PS4 once it's released later this year.

This shouldn't really be a surprise to anybody - Skyrim was one of the biggest games of the last few years and Bethesda will be doing everything in their power to ensure that they don't lose their console fans, people who will buy probably not even knowing it's an MMO. Optimized for controller, it's good news that it's not being held back by current-gen consoles, and I think that this game can look so good running on this hardware is a testament to both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

The trailer showed off some first person gameplay and some large scale combat. The latter looked very Elder Scrolls, while the former looked very MMO, so it's going to be an interesting combination of the two if nothing else. Elder Scrolls Online will allow you to explore many of the locations you've loved from previous titles in the franchise (including Skyrim), so it's going to be really hard not to recommend at least trying it out.

If there's one thing we can take from this year's E3, it's that MMOs are no longer just for PC gamers. It'll be interesting to see how PC MMOs become more console-fied over the coming years, perhaps with controller support becoming the norm. The Elder Scrolls Online allows you to create a character from scratch, choose perks and explore the worlds of Oblivion, Skyrim and more to your hearts content, alongside thousands of others doing the same thing.
