FFXIV: A Realm Reborn PC/PS3 Release Date Announced

in Final Fantasy 14, News

Square Enix have announced a release date for their Final Fantasy XIV restructure, A Realm Reborn. Coming to both PlayStation 3 and PC this summer, Square have decided to stick with the subscription model, most likely to recuperate some of the losses that came with releasing a half-finished, annoyingly dull MMO.

You won't have to wait long to start your Eorzean adventure either. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will release across multiple platforms on 27th August 2013. With only three months to go and at least one more beta test between now and then, there's a lot of scope for more announcements, lots of feedback and plenty of bug fixes. If nothing else, you can guarentee that Square won't make the same mistake they did last time. A Realm Reborn is going to be at least decent.

The subscription rates for the UK and Europe were also announced. You'll be able to access the world of Final Fantasy XIV for £7.69/€10.99 a month. Not a huge amount for those that are desperate for another Final Fantasy MMO experience (although Final Fantasy XI still remains hugely popular and is well supported), but enough that some people might give it a pass. The shift towards free-to-play or pay-once models has changed the MMO landscape and not everybody is comfortable with subscriptions, although the press release stresses that they have tried to go as cheap as they possibly can.

Also announced were a set of pre-order incentives, as well the contents of the collector's edition of the game.

Pre-order incentives include early access to the game, although there isn't a specific time frame mentioned (probably fair to presume it's about a week, and be impressed if it's any longer). You'll also get a Cait Sith Doll Minion - which will act as a pet, although you won't be able to use him in battle - and a mog cap. Cait Sith is the little cat from the iconic Final Fantasy VII, whilst the mog cap represents one of the most recognisable creatures born from the Final Fantasy series.

It's taken a few years, but it's fantastic to see that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is coming close to its release date, and that it's looking like it might have a chance of fixing the Final Fantasy XIV name. After the contraversy of its launch, months of free time and a short while where it was closed down completely, that's an impressive feat no matter what.
