League of Legends: A Twist of Fate Cinematic Trailer
The most popular PC game of last year, League of Legends, shows no sign of slowing down, and to prove this point, Riot Games have released a cinematic trailer showing off some of their most popular characters. The video, entitled twist of fate, is pretty good fun and is undoubtedly well made, and that's paid off by it having been viewed almost 10 million times in the space of three days. Nobody needs to be reminded that League of Legends exists, but that amount of views can in no way be a bad thing (no matter what some of the less keen viewers might be saying...)
The video has little to do with the game itself, of course. Essentially an extended battle scene, this is more like something out of a League of Legends Saturday morning cartoon than it is an accurate depiction of the game itself. There's nothing at all wrong with that, as it has allowed the video's creators to build something that's really indicative of the characters included, as opposed to the nature of League itself. This is what's really happening when you take away the lane-focussed four ability limit of a video game.
Although the conversation within the comments on the video quickly boiled down to "DotA 2 Vs League of Legends," most people seemed suitably impressed. The anger seems to lie in the fact that this time and money could have been spent on updates, although that could be said of anything that Riot do that isn't specifically updates. There's not much in the way of story there, but there's an attention to detail that only the most avid LoL players will appreciate. There are things that seem so natural, but are in fact based upon out of this world moves from the game itself.
Labelled as a "gift to the players," it's hard not to see it that way. I can't imagine it was cheap and it certainly would have taken up a lot of time, but the end result (and its going viral) more than makes up for that.
