Immediately, there is a sense of unfamiliarity, a thrilling sensation of not knowing what is currently happening nor what is about to happen next. Player's are thrown into the enchantingly dark world of Rusty Hearts, slowly piecing the puzzle together as they fight their way through the legions of enemies that they will encounter. Although most of the back story is still unknown to player's at this point, the aspects that are incorporated throughout the game-play are quite enticing. The ensuing game-play and visual proficiency accentuate the overall experience. Keeping to their tradition of producing quality MMORPG's, China-based Perfect World seem to have even gone an extra mile with this particular game. With recent success from their development team, such as the self-titled Perfect World and Forsaken World, the company has already proven itself to be a strong competitor in the gaming industry, and the various characteristics and details they have incorporated into Rusty Hearts only further enhances their capacity. Considered as a Hack-'n'-Slash Anime MMORPG, Rusty Hearts definitely provides a lot of hacking and slashing for players to participate in. From room to room within the many dark and dangerous dungeons, a variety of foes will be encountered and the action will be an intense exhibition of hack-'n'-slash combat as players complete the numerous quests they will be given throughout their journey to bring peace and justice to Castle Curtis.

As this game is still in an Open Beta stage (at the time of this Rusty Hearts review ), there are some of the usual tweaks and alterations to be expected. The flow of the game is still being fully adjusted and figured out, there are still new areas to be created. For the most part, the game is already quite a big success with a lot of potential to carry with. Some examples of recent changes that have taken place include: Increasing the level cap from twenty to twenty-five and the implementing of one hundred and fifty new quests. As this is still in a Beta form, more changes can definitely be expected. One of the more highly anticipated new features is the availability of the 4th character. Currently this character, Natasha, is viewable in the character selection screen, but her history and abilities remain a secret. On September 28th, it was announced that the first ever updated titled, Awakening, would be released which included a wide variety of new content for players to enjoy. Some of the new content includes: Four new dungeons to explore and conquer and several new weapons and items, amongst a whole list of other changes that will enhance the overall immersion. The release of Awakening is schedule to go live October 11th, 2011 and already it is a highly anticipated moment within the community as a buzz of excitement can be seen and felt. There are already several active servers, there located in North America and one in Europe, each containing ten channels within the available world.
The characters are one of the more salient facets of the game. Even though there are currently only three available players, they are all unique in many ways, each having a long list of items, weapons and skills to acquire. The development and amplifying of the characters is one of the more gratifying aspects of the game. Each of the three available characters are unique in their own way; Angela Strraughend is a witch, Frantz Kruger is a hybrid human-vampire, and Tude MacLeod is a wanderer. There is a forth character that is only visibly available for players and the excitement for her official arrival into the game-play grows steadily. Although, there are some similarities found within Rusty Hearts to other games of similar genres, or to other dungeon-brawler games; the way everything has been put together by Perfect World is captivating and intensely enjoyable. There does not seem to be much missing, besides the story, but even that is captivating in way of anticipation and the mysticism of the unknown. What is known about the back story is that the four heroes are on a mission to track and hunt down the evil Count Vlad somewhere amongst the dungeons of Castle Curtis. Their goal is to defeat him so they can rid their realm of the evil he creates and causes. The rest of the story revolves around the characters themselves and the quests that unfold; which help with the story progression and character development.
Once player's jump into the action they will soon realize that this game is intensely fast-paced, requiring some quick-thinking and fast-reactions as they will participate in rapidly rabid action sequences. Although the action sequences themselves mimic that of other dungeon-fighting games, the style of fighting that each character uses and the variety of enemies that will be faced provide for a fairly distinctly propelling journey to engage. There is a list of skills that players can already acquire with lots of room still available for more to be implemented. Although the buttons can at first be a bit tricky to adapt to, once players are accustomed to them, they will enjoy the usage and abilities thereafter as there is a quite an impressive emphasis given into the heroes actions and animations. The quests can be completed in parties which can be officially registered. Player's battle their way through various rooms in the dungeons, battling against a wide variety of enemies. When they reach the end of a dungeon section, they will face a boss who will be significantly more difficult than the normal assailants. There are many items, weapons and clothing that can found throughout the dungeons, while some can be purchased or given to by NPC's. Player's can also trade with each other if they wish to do so and even crafting has been incorporated into the game-play. Although, most of this game is based on PVE game-play, there does exist the PVP arena battling option. One interesting aspect is that player's have a certain amount of stamina which indicates how often they are able to battle in the dungeons, which seems to be an attempt to prevent grinding for occurring.
Not only is the appearance of a game impeccable, but also the accompanying sounds and music play an extremely important role to the overall enjoyment and value of a game. Perfect World seems to have provided a nice equilibrium within this game, as the visual and audio implemented throughout are quite compelling and enjoyable. The characters appearances and details are fascinating with the anime style embodied throughout. Yet, the anime appeal also expands into the visual array that assembles and compiles the world itself, further enhancing that sentiment. Although most of the game takes place fighting within the dungeons, and as it is proceeding at a fast pace, with players moving to each room quite quickly - what is present for the viewer to see will definitely be appealing as it contrasts not only the mood that is set within the game, but also the heavy battling that players will become involved in. The musical score is definitely highly complimentary of the dim, Gothic appearance as well, although at times it can be a bit overwhelming, it is still very fitting for the scenery. The composition is alluring, especially with the dark, accentuate piano as a focal point, making it charismatic of the mood being set.
