Guild Wars 2 Expansion Replaced by Living World

in Guild Wars 2, News

There's a very good chance that there'll never be a full expansion for Guild Wars 2. Instead, you can continue to expect bi-weekly updates in the shape of "The Living World." Love them or hate them, they're here to stay, and will probably prevent a full world change on the scale of World of Warcraft's Cataclysm from ever happening.

Then again, maybe that's not so terrible as and of itself.

Lead content designer for ArenaNet, Mike Zadorojny, recently said that if things worked out as planned with the Living World, "...we will probably never do an expansion and everything will be going into this Living World strategy."

It's an idea with a lot of potential, not least because the current Living World is absolutely free, and core players will be constantly hooked with new content (and be more willing to part with their hard earned cash).

It's not so much what we're gaining from this though and more what we're losing. Guild Wars 2 will never have another huge launch, there probably won't be huge regions added or new, out-of-Tyria content sold at a premium.

Does that mean it'll never happen? Of course not, and there's every chance that this was just an off-hand PR comment designed to impress upon readers the importance of the Living World.

But for now, presume this is what we've got.
