Star Trek Online: free to play in January
![]()
Having acquired the MMORPG from Atari, Perfect World Entertainment has been making plans to set Star Trek Online free to play. The free-to-play model was expected to come in Q4 2011 but it has been delayed for some reason. Good news is that we won't wait too long.
Perfect World Entertainment with several MMO games that offer free to play gameplay was expected to utilise the same f2p model for Star Trek Online. The game was acquired by PWE from Atari back in May for about $50 million. Star Trek Online will have a free to play option from January 17, 2012 according to the latest announcement from PWE.
A recent industry report by Newzoo shows how free-to-play model is being preferred by MMO gamers. According to this report, free-to-play MMO revenues in 7 key EU countries totals $1.1bn.
