SWTOR Lead Designer: Play SWTOR For Free Up To Level 50

Star Wars The Old Republic, as you may already know, is going to have a free-to-play version soon. While f2p fans are looking forward to getting their hands on SWTOR for the first time (for free), developers have been working on final touches. With an alpha version currently being tested, which received positive feedback according to the developers, lead designer of the MMO revealed their core rules for the free to play transition. Read on for details.
Star Wars The Old Republic Free To Play Transition Update
Who would have thought 12 months ago? I for one would never think that Bioware had plans to offer a free-to-play version of its extremely anticipated Star Wars game The Old Republic. SWTOR was always going to be subscription based. However, free-to-play is working for most MMOs and publishers don't hesitate to go down that road. With so many titles going free to play in 2012, it was only a matter of time that The Old Republic would be offered as f2p too. Despite its preliminary success, it didn't become the WoW killer that so many people expected it to be. Now that the game is definitely going to have a f2p version soon, lead designer Damion Schubert posted a new article explaining the current status of SWTOR f2p version.
Schubert says that the team has been running the Alpha version on test servers with a group of experienced and newbie players. According to Schubert, the f2p version has received positive feedback from both groups of players.
Play SWTOR for free up to level 50
This is a question so many fans of the game have been asking around. So, it's going to be free-to-play but what is the catch here? Will it be free to play forever? Can I just go on playing the game without paying a dime forever? Schubert says they have two core rules for free-to-play. First rule is to provide SWTOR free-to-play accounts to enjoy the game up to level 50 without paying a dime. Don't start dancing yet. This doesn't mean there won't be any restrictions. Of course there will be. The content is going to limited to free-to-play accounts. And they won't be gaining experience as fast as subscribers. That's the trick here. (Fair enough) Schubert also says that several aspects of the gameplay experience will be limited too. (It still doesn't stop anyone from giving it a shot.)
The second rule is for the sake of subscribers. SWTOR subscribers won't feel any degradation of their gameplay experience. On the contrary, Bioware has surprises for subscribers. Subscribers will see benefits from the update, including two more quick slot bars, a new purchasable Cargo Hold tab, and a monthly grant of Complimentary Cartel Coins. I think this makes it all that great for subscribers as well! You can read Schubert's whole post here if you like>>
