Wildstar to support user created add-ons

We have not heard much from Wildstar developers lately but they have their regular Wildstar Wednesday event if you are interested in hearing from Carbine Studios and Wildstar's development. The latest session revealed Carbine's plans for user created Add-ons for the upcoming MMO.

Wildstar to support User created add-ons

The latest developer blog posted on Carbine's Wildstar MMO website was written by Carbine Studios' lead software engineer Jon Wiesman. Jon talks about the user created add-ons that will be supported in Wildstar. He also tells about his experience with various programming languages, his passion for learning new languages and his frustration with Ruby.

When you read the post, you will be fascinated to find out -if you love writing add-ons for games- that the user interface engine for Wildstar is basically an XML-based engine that allows players to change the look, layout of the user interface.

Jon Wiesman: "For the last 5 ½ years I've been working here at Carbine on Apollo, the user interface engine for WildStar, which will not only be an XML-based engine that allows you to change the look and layout of the user interface, but is also a Lua-based engine that supports fully customized functionality for that UI."

Jon's experience with trying to find a suitable programming language for his browser based application is also fun to read. Apparently, he wanted to do this with a new language (new to him) and he has had a bad experience with Ruby.

Imagine your own user interface for Wildstar

Jon Wiesman: "A friend of mine who knows Ruby suggested I try that.... Then I had to set up a command-line environment with certain environmental variables. It was tedious and frustrating."

Players with some programming skills will be able to develop add-ons for Wildstar

According to Wiesman, he is going to come up with a decent solution so that any player who can program at all, will be able to write his own add-on for Wildstar user interface. Which sounds fantastic, doesn't it? Or are you not a nerd yet?
