Waren Story Review

Waren Story is available to download now in beta and, if you enjoy being on the very cusp of a brand new MMO, you’ll probably be either downloading the client or playing the game as we speak.   Is it worth joining the beta yet? We gave it a shot! Read it all about Waren Story in our review.

Genre: Free to play MMORPG

Publisher: Aeria Games

Release Date: 2012

Play Waren Story

We took it upon ourselves to jump into the game and give it a shot, perhaps saving you the effort and disappointment of doing it yourself. Is it worth joining the beta now, or is this one to miss for the time being? For everybody else, you’ll probably want to wait a little while for the bugs to be ironed out and the game to mature a little bit.

Waren Story Review - Positives

Well Supported

Both in terms of the amount of players I’ve seen and in terms of the fact that we’re in the very earl beta stages and things can only get better quite quickly. As people start to become tired of Waren Story and the edge of being the new kid in town starts to wear off, the population is likely to dip a little bit but for now there are hundreds of people to play with. This is aided by the fact that there’s currently only one server (at least available in Europe) and so everybody who’s playing is playing in the same place.

On top of that, the fact that we’re in beta means that Aeria are probably going to be actively looking at fixing things and removing bugs and improving customer satisfaction is going to be of the upmost importance to the teams working on the game. So if you have a problem, expect it to be removed quite quickly.

Giant Battles

While these aren’t exactly perfect, they’re what Waren Story has going for it, so expect this to be the focus of future updates. From the very beginning of my time in the Waren Story beta, I was being invited to Annihilation Wars, in which myself and nearly 30 other players took on giant enemies as a team. To be honest, it was a little cluttered, feeling more mayhem-fuelled than perhaps is enjoyable, but it still ended up being very impressive and very enjoyable.

Waren Story Review - Neutrals

The Graphics

For a game released in 2012, Waren Story looks like a game released in 2006. That might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but there’s something about this game that feels very dated as soon as you turn it on. On top of that, the locations that I’ve seen so far see to be quite big without very much filling them, aside from the occasional herd of monsters, and so you get the feeling that you’re in a big, old world.

It’s also worth noting that the frame rate is limited to 30FPS at the moment; I’m not sure why.

Seeing the World

The art design, like the graphics, makes you feel like you’ve seen much of Waren Story before. It’s the sort of game with big open castle towns and courtyards filled with foliage, not exactly an original location for an MMORPG.

Defending Yourself

With games like TERA on the market, it always seems a little bit dry to go back to the old way of MMO battle. Click on the enemy to start fighting, watch until one of you dies, occasionally adding the use of potions or skills to shake things up. It’s really rather frustrating.

Medieval Music

There won’t be a huge amount you’ll remember about the score from Waren Story, but, like much else, you’ll probably get the odd feeling that you’ve heard it all before.

Waren Story Review - Negatives

Acting the Hero

Quests are about as generic as they can be, although I must admit I love the picture of the person you’re having a conversation with popping up when you talk to them. The problem is more with what they say though, and sometimes quests can be mildly confusing and non-specific, and when you understand them, dull anyway.

Creating your Character

There are a number of different types of character to choose from, although they don’t look especially different from one another. While the battle system basically ends up being the same, you can choose from archers, mages, brawlers and a few others. Ultimately though, the choices feel very limited and you end up playing the same game anyway.

Living, breathing Waren

Perhaps it’s down to the fact that we’re playing in the very early stages of a beta, but I have absolutely no idea what’s going on. Rather, I wouldn’t if I’d just found the game, downloaded it and began to play. It’s never good to have to check multiple websites before you know what you’re doing in a game.

Conclusion: Waren Story Review

After my short time playing Waren Story, it’s hard to conclude anything but that it’s another generic fantasy MMORPG. If you see it in Waren, you’ll probably have seen it elsewhere as well, which isn’t a nice feeling to have when you’ve only played the game for a few hours. I’ve used the word a couple of times in this review and it perfectly sums up my thoughts on the game: generic. Perhaps when we come back to look at it again a few months down the line it’ll have discovered its own personality and we’ll decide that things aren’t as bad as they were but, for now, I’d say there are games on the market more deserving of your time and, ultimately, your money.
