10 MMOs you should keep on your radar

10 MMOs to keep on your radarBack in 90's we never had a problem with the number of games being released. The more games released, the merrier we were. Today, with thousands of Massively Multiplayer Games out there, it is never easy to keep up with all the games. You can't be downloading games all day and look for a game to your liking, So we have made a list of the 10 MMOs you should keep on your radar.

Star Wars The Old Republic

The Old Republic remains one of the biggest games of this year, MMO or not, both in terms of size and in terms of popularity. What some people deemed a WoW-killer hsan’t quite turned out to be the powerhouse that is should have been, but it’s chugging along nicely and you can expect updated and expansions well into 2012. With so much money and effort from one of the most respected developers in the business - as well as backing from LucasArts when it comes to the Star Wars IP – it’s fair to say that The Old Republic is one to watch.

Lord of the Rings Online

It’s fair to say that Lord of the Rings online just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It was a fairly popular game when it was subscription-based and it has continued to go from strength to strength since it went free to play in September 2010. With the Riders of Rohan expansion recently announced, it won’t take much to get people back into their wizard costumes and shaving their feet. There’s plenty being added to the game: new areas, new level cap (85) and a new mounted battle system – so expect to hear much more about Middle Earth in 2012.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft isn’t only a title to watch, it’s so massive that it tends to blot out everything else so that you find yourself surprised that, wherever you look, there’s more World of Warcraft. So in 2012, even though you may not be paying all that much attention, you’ll probably hear a lot about Mists of Pandaria and its occupants and about all the people flooding back for more content. On top of that, there’s a Vanilla WoW emulator making its rounds on the internet and, if it’s not instantly shut down, expect a lot of ex-Warcraft players coming back via that.

Guild Wars 2

It’s been a long time coming – Guild Wars 2 was announced back in 2007 - but THE MMO release of 2012 is promising to be something incredibly special. The original Guild Wars may not have had the sheer numbers of World of Warcraft, but it was different enough that managed to become a major competitor in the MMO genre. After a couple of years of being spoon fed information, 2012 is the year that people will be able to see exactly what they’ve been waiting for and, I think, they’re in for a treat.

10 MMOs to keep on your radar in 2012

Dust 514

MAG was a little bit of a disappointment, it wasn’t dreadful but when you played it tended to feel like you were just part of a regular shooting match, much of the epic stuff you heard about during development never really paid off and you spent your time waiting to respawn (although that might have just been me). Dust 514 is a very promising PS3 title that links up to the huge EVE Online, a fact that might just make the difference between FPS and FPSMMO that more noticeable. Boasting beautiful graphics, large games (and the promise that they may get bigger) and interaction with a top-selling MMO, Dust is certainly one to look out for this year.

Final Fantasy XIV

A lot of people have given up all hope on Final Fantasy XIV and I think it’s fair to say that many of those people gave up hope during the beta. I never played it but I heard it was incredibly dry, offering menu after menu, pretty graphics and not much else. This year the developers are out to prove a point – getting the subscription going again (they introduced a Welcome Back campaign for formers players recently) and launching the huge 2.0 update - and I’d be incredibly surprised if this game doesn’t end up on many a “Best MMO of 2012” list at the end of the year.

DDO monsters

Dungeons & Dragons Online with Menace of the Underdark

Perhaps one of the most anticipated expansions of the year is "Menace of the Underdark" that will take players to Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons. The update is coming late June and Dungeons & Dragons Online which is already a fantastic game will only get better. Players will have to get used to the setting but looking at Turbine's latest videos for the new expansion, DDO has got so much to offer players with the Menace of the Underdark expansion. By the way, if you are already playing DDO, don't miss our Dungeons & Dragons Online giveaways every Saturday.

World of Tanks

The developers of World of Tanks have promised quite a few future updates for the title, with the main area being bring more tanks from different countries and time zones into the game. That might not mean a lot to people who haven’t played World of Tanks, but it’s such a unique title and the developers do such a great job at modelling the tanks that it’s an absolute joy to learn they’re bringing more. As the game continues to grow this year, it’ll be interesting to see what else the developers are planning on bringing to the battlefield. There is also the World of Warplanes that is arriving soon.

TERA

TERA of course, what else? TERA which is already in its final closed beta this weekend is probably in top 3 games list of all MMORPG fans. Defined as "True Action MMO" by its developer En Masse, TERA is visually stunning and its action part of the game is what makes it unique. Different from the classic MMORPGs that you press a key and watch your character perform an action -where gamepads are supported as well-, in TERA, you actually actively control all the action. TERA will certainly become a popular MMORPG when it's released next month. (May 2012)

Rumble Fighter

Rumble Fighter was great fun; it didn’t have a deep plot or even a particularly amazing fighting system, but it was just a lot of fun. Outside of new fighting styles and maps, I’m not really sure what the developers could do to expand, but I think as more people get involved, the game will become more enjoyable and, considering the amount of advertising I’ve seen for it lately. With more people, the social side of the game will explode and there’s nothing better than knocking your friends from high places!

Secret World

I’ll be honest and say that I don’t really know much about Secret World. I read a description recently that has stuck in my mind and made this a must-play when it comes out in a couple of months. The game is set in the modern world, a world filled with urban legends, conspiracies and myths made real. This is pretty unique for an MMO and worth mention, usually things are either set in the distant future or the distant past. Secret World looks set to bring together the sci-fi and fantasy MMO and that alone makes it worth playing, the things they’re bringing to the class and level system are just added bonuses. This could certainly be a game that shakes up the genre for the better.

Sure there are a couple of MMOs that we keep an eye on and there are many new MMOs that have potential. I can also hear some of you screaming "Why is .... not here?".

We will be updating this list if we happen to notice a new MMO that is really worth playing. And as always, we need your feedback so let us know which MMO you'd add to this list.

What do you think?

I'm really impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it’s rare to see a nice blog like this one today..
