If you like browser based MMOs, you probably have seen a lot of games developed with Unity 3D engine. We surely adore the capabilities of Unity and we have admired various MMO games powered by the engine in the last couple years. Today, Unity Technologies announced the new version of the engine; Unity 4. Read on for details.
Unity 4 to arrive with fantastic new features
Unity is an innovative game engine that has allowed any type of developer from Indie studios to the biggest studios to develop multi-platform online games. From web browsers on the PC and MAC to mobile operating systems like iOS or Android, Unity gives the developer the chance to forget about the platform and just focus on developing the game.
Today, Unity Technologies revealed the features of its upcoming new engine: Unity 4.
Unity 4 which will be deomonstrated this summer will host a lot of new features such as the new Mecanim animation technology, Linux publishing, DirectX 11 graphics support and native Flash publishing support.

Mecanim – New character animation technology
One of the biggest features of Unity 4 is the brand new character animation technology; Mecanim which allows developers to bring their characters to life with a few mouse clicks in UNITY editor.
Robert Lanciault, Lead Animation Developer, Unity Technologies said: “The introduction of the Mecanim suite of animation tools into Unity will completely change how developers integrate interactive animations and will result in awesome new gameplay experiences from the Unity community. These tools will allow animators to work directly in Unity to create advanced and detailed animation blend trees and state machines for incredible and natural character animation.”
DirectX 11 support
Unity 4 will come with DX11 graphics support giving developer the opportunity to increase GPU and shader capacity using Shader Model 5, tesellation for better models and take advantage of advanced GPU computations.
Linux Publishing
And there comes the Linux deployment. In Unity 4, the new deployment option will be there as a demo. I believe this is something Unity Technologies will improve further in the next version but it's really exciting to wait and see how Unity 4 does this.
and there are other features that will arrive with Unity 4:
- Shuriken particle system supports external forces, bent normals and automatic culling
- 3D texture support
- Navigation: dynamic obstacles and avoidance priority
- Major optimizations in UnityGUI performance and memory usage
- Dynamic fonts on all platforms with HTML-like markup
- Remote Unity Web Player debugging
- New Project Window workflows
- Iterative lightmap baking
- Refined component-based workflows
- Extensible inspectors for custom classes
- Improved Cubemap import pipeline
- Geometry data improvements for huge memory and performance savings
- Meshes can be constructed from non-triangle geometry - render points & lines efficiently
