Nintendo MiiverseIt's the week of E3. I'm writing this entirely oblivious to what the week will bring. I have my work area set out – popcorn, cool beverage, list of reasons not to get excited about the Microsoft conference – and this week I’ll be lost in the world of video games. Nintendo, rather cheekily, has pre-empted everybody else with a short reveal on their website, presumably so that we can learn about some of the Wii U games coming from EA and Ubisoft, and have revealed something rather interesting. The console’s GUI, its way of interfacing with both the player and the network of friends and players digitally surrounding him, has taken a great deal of influence from the MMO and, helped by a few rumours, it could be a great way to find friends when released this autumn.

It was time to get serious. I’d taken something of a slow trip into my first proper play through of TERA, I’d lazily explored the world and fought anything I felt needed a good kicking, but I’d taken quests as something optional. That was about to change. It was time to jump head first into TERA’s story and find my place amongst all the busy people I’d seen exploring the world. I’d done a few of the tutorial levels, I’d picked up some basic skills and I’d levelled up more than perhaps I needed to at this point in the game and it was time to find out why I was here. It turns out that TERA makes a big mistake early in its infancy and it’s a mistake I usually find it quite hard to forgive in an MMO. We’ll touch on that later.

Assassin's Creed MMO a good idea?A couple of years ago, when I was just a bud figure in the games journalism world (now I’m just fruit gone bad), I wrote an article about how Assassin’s Creed’s multiplayer, the first of its kind in Brotherhood, could potentially be one of the best online experiences of all time, if only Ubisoft had changed a few things. Two games along and it doesn’t seem like they’re shaking it up any; if anything, it’s getting worse. There’s a long list of good things to say about the multiplayer component in the recent Assassin’s Creed games, and a lot of bad things, and the news of a potential Assassin’s Creed MMO could extend either list. In today’s article, I thought we’d take a look at why a massively multiplayer entry in the world of Ezio and pals could be a great thing – and why it might not.
