Everquest Next to Debut at E3

in Everquest, News

Alongside console must-haves like The Last of Us, The Last Guardian and Infamous: Second Sun, it seems like Sony will be bringing Everquest Next with them to E3. At the very least, the game has been named on the E3 insider site. After years of teasing and what seems to be some pretty heavy restructuring, Everquest fans will be happy to know that their wait is almost over. It's almost time to see where their favourite franchise is headed next. This, linked with a hinted 2013 release date, means you might be playing "the largest sandbox MMO ever" (their words, not ours) sooner than you might think.

The last "proper" Everquest game, Everquest 2, was released almost a decade ago, in 2004. Since then, SOE have released a series of expansions for that game, including one released last year. For at least the last two or three of those years, the developers have been talking about Everquest Next, including the fact that they had to completely redo it.

Whilst much of the framework for the game remained the same, SOE saw the way that MMOs were going (presumably thanks to games like Guild Wars 2, Defiance and The Secret World) and decided to shake things up, to push the industry instead of building on Everquest 2's ongoing success.

Despite rather a lot of talk, very little has been revealed about Everquest Next. Fans tired of Everquest 2 and people who want something a little more modern will be hungry for information, and that information will come sooner rather than later. We were first told that the full reveal would happen in August, but the game has shown up on the official E3 website, and there's no reason to think SOE won't be there, ready to spill their longheld secrets.
