Planetside 2: No Room For Hacking Tools

in News, PlanetSide 2

Hacking tools, aimbots and all sorts of exploiting tools are commonly used by a group of players in many MMOs. Sometimes they get away with it and all the damage is done to those who play fair and square. Last night we have been following SOE's CEO John Smedley's tweets and it looks like him and the developers of the Planetside 2 are all out hunting those who play dirty. Continue reading for some of Smedley's tweets.

Smedley and Planetside 2 devs after exploiters and hackers

Call it hackers, cheaters or script-kiddies, whatever you call it, when they have a couple of working (or half working) tools out there, noone can stop them except for determined developers or GMs. And that's not all easy either. GM's usually have a limited set of tools and developers can only offer the tools for exploits they anticipate. And then GMs need accurate and legitimate reports from players who are careful enough to catch a cheater.

Then comes the tricky part. Will it be a warning or will it be a permanent account banishment? Will it be account based or IP-based? What about dynamic-IP's and VPN's and all the complications you can think of.

Planetside 2 is a free to play MMOFPS and it's going to be a cheater's paradise if SOE doesn't come up with strict punishments. Even if you ban a f2p account, all it takes is to sign up with another e-mail account. Even if it's an IP based ban, a nasty player can use a VPN to bypass the IP-based banishment.

We can only hope for SOE to develop a better system than traditional account-level punishments. The ultimate solution would be a system that simply catches those who use aim-bots or any other exploiting tools.

Smedley's scope aimed at cheaters

Last night, John Smedley has been tweeting about this topic and he seemed to be really dedicated to catching all cheaters in game. He defined them as dumba**es. He is right and we really wish him and the devs good luck catching all the cheaters and preventing the use of such tools in the future. He also said that they were prepared for this and they have already started banning people.
