Third Realm Reborn Beta Starts June 14th
Square Enix recently announced that the third phase in the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn closed beta testing would be coming soon. They've since gotten a little more specific, announcing that A Realm Reborn will be entering phase three closed beta on June 14th. This is the first beta for PS3 players, so great news for those of us who've been waiting to take the adventure to consoles since 2010.
This will be the last phase of closed testing, with the fourth phase, at least on PC, fully open to everybody. The NDA has also been partially lifted, so expect trickles of news to start heading out. How much has Final Fantasy XIV really improved? Does it work as smoothly as the screenshots seem to imply? I expect these are all questions that will be answered long before the game's August 27th release date.
If you still haven't signed up for the beta test, you can still do so at the Square Enix beta sign-up page. If you still own a copy of Final Fantasy XIII, you can input the code that came with that in order to be a higher priority PS3 member. Phase 3 brings with it a series of new additions to the game, including new locations and stories. Of course, it's the character creation that really matters, so those obsessed with creating themselves in digital form will be happy to learn this is the first test that allows for full character customization. There will also be standard fixes and improvements over the phase 2 beta.
And finally, a reminder, if you manage to get into Phase 3, your character will be deleted before the start of phase 4. If you don't want to have to go through everything again when the open beta hits, it may make more sense to hold off your excitement for just a little while longer and play in the Phase 4 testing, most likely available in July.
