World of Warcraft: Down to 9.1 million subscribers

Blizzard has just posted its latest financial report, covering the second quarter of 2012. As of July 2012, World of Warcraft has 9.1 million subscribers. This means another big loss for the company. Only three months ago, Blizzard had reported 10.2 million subscribers in its Q1-2012 report. In the report, Blizzard also mentions the huge success of Diablo 3. Read on for details.

World of Warcraft  - Down to 9.1 million subscribers

World of Warcraft is still the number 1 MMORPG that is subscription based. However, it doesn't look all that bright for Blizzard with the continous drop in number of subscribers. For the first time in years of its existence, World of Warcraft has less than 10 million subscribers. It's still not too bad and one can argue that it's actually still fantastic at 9.1 million subscribers with all the competition WoW has got now. 

Looking at the other titles, such as Star Wars The Old Republic that couldn't stick with the subscription based business model for too long, there are hundreds of other MMORPG's that gamers can and do play today. 

Pandarians to gain back the lost subscribers?

Blizzard will soon release the new expansion "Mists of Pandaria" and despite the loss in the number of subscribers, the total revenues look solid. Compared to the fiscal year of 2011, which Blizzard had a total revenue of $ 1,146 million, in 2012, they had $1,075. 

On another note, Blizzard made sure it mentions the success of Diablo 3, with more than 10 million new players.

World of Warcraft may have lost subscribers but Blizzard remains positive about the results.

In the financial report, it says "Based on better-than-expected second quarter results, the company is raising its calendar year net revenue and earnings per share outlook."

The company also confirms the release date of Mists of Pandaria in this report. Blizzard Entertainment expects to release World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria on September 25, 2012.
