Public Dungeons in The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online will bring back the Public Dungeons we used to see in the first generation of MMO games like the good old Everquest.  Game director Matt Firor spoke to Edge and told them about Bethesda's plans to use public dungeons for socialising.

Speaking to Edge Online ESO's game director Matt Firor underlined the importance of Public Dungeons in their development plans. According to Firor, Public Dungeons, once existed in the first generation of MMO games, will make a return for the third generation of the genre.

Firor says: "If anybody’s played MMOGs for a long time, they’ll know that the very first generation had public dungeons. Public dungeons were my favourite thing about EverQuest, in fact, and I can’t think of an MMOG since then that’s had them.

Bethesda's developer's goal is to bring back Public Dungeons to help with The Elder Scrolls Online social elements. If Bethesda's plans work out, and if the new generation of MMO gamers love the idea too, public dungeons will allow players to connect with other players.

This doesn't mean that ESO won't have private dungeons and raid dungeons. Surely, the game will offer these too but Public Dungeons is indeed a good idea to give players a chance to experience what old-school MMO gamers have.

One could argue that Matt Firor's plans might fail as some things change in gaming industry and it's not only the games themselves. Gamers evolve and trying to connect players in Public Dungeons may not work out at all in the end. We shall wait and see...
