Star Trek Online Season 6 to arrive in June for testing

Dan Stahl, executive producer of Star Trek Online at Cryptic has posted answers for 31 questions in the new edition of Ask Cryptic. In another answer, he explains how the development team couldn't create much new content as they had to work on  free-to-play transformation

Star Trek Online is among the few MMOs that players expect to see their questions answered regularly. Thanks to Dan Stahl, the executive producer at Cryptic, players can submit their questions each month and he answers a number of them in the first week of every month. 

In the new May edition of Ask Crytpic, Dan Stahl answered 31 community questions. We have highlights for you:

In an answer to question about the release date of Season 6 on test server, Stahl said:

Dstahl: QA is currently running through the new Season 6 baseline code and verifying that all previous features are working. We expect them to wrap that up within the first half of May and then start posting updates to the TRIBBLE test server. By early June, most of Season 6 will be available for testing, unless of course we withhold some features as surprises. 

Another question was regarding the missions that would continue the main story line. Apparently we are not going to see anything until after Season 6 update. 

Another interesting bit is about the free to play transformation. One of the members defined the lack of fun and enjoyable content and lack of endgame as "The Dark Age". Dan Stahl explained this as

Dstahl: The “Dark Ages” you speak of is related to the fact that as a live team, the majority of the last year was spent converting the game to F2P -- most of our resources were locked into back end code and content conversion as part of the process. Looking through our release notes, you can see that we’ve clearly released a lot of updates, but nothing specifically targeted to end game or exploration missions. Our next two updates are focused on adding new content for End Game. Whether or not that also includes exploration is TBD. Will you see something as big as a “WoW paid expansion”? Probably not, but you will see our team continue to add as many new features and missions as our schedule allows.

As you see, free to play transformation is not that easy. Even a studio like Cryptic accept that the transformation has kept them away from creating new content. Another troubling part is that they admit the game won't have a big expansion like WoW expansions. It looks like we should accept the fact that there are sacrifices to be expected whenever a game transforms into free-to-play.
