Surge of interest in MMO games development

Is it the Star Wars The Old Republic or the continous success of World of Warcraft, or maybe it's TERA, Rift or The Secret World. Whatever the motivation is, thousands of new developers have joined the MMO games development according to a latest report.
MMO games are not new. However, the market continues to grow and with Star Wars The Old Republic, it has reached a peak late 2011. This is not only bringing more players to the MMO world, it also attracts thousands of game developers.
According to the news on Yahoo! , the interest in MMO development has been fueled by the recent launch of giant MMO titles.
If you want numbers, IDEA Fabrik PLC, the maker of hosted development system HeroCloud's creator has revealed figures proving the surge of interest in MMO development.
Neil Harris, Chief Operating Officer of Idea Fabrik, said, “In January we have been inundated with thousands of inquiries from studios, large and small, more than in any other period in the company’s existence. The number of developers’ licenses to create games on the HeroEngine is now more than 5,000. The increase in interest in online game development has been fueled by the excitement about successful launches last year of MMO games from EA and from Trion Worlds.”
This is only good news for us. With the increased level of competition and the number of alternative games (and more likely f2p games) we will be seeing better games this year. Fingers crossed...
